IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE
I was up by 5:00 yesterday morning in order to cram freezing dressing into a frigid 19+ lb. turkey in time to shove him into the oven by 5:30 so we could eat by 2:00pm. And I must say that I cooked a mighty fine turkey. Very tender and moist, owing partially to the two sticks of butter I used in the dressing. And boy was that dressing good! Also, I made the best gravy I've ever made, and I usually can't make gravy.
We ate at Zappa and Lady J's home. They live in the woods half way up a treacherous hill. The road is steep and was slick yesterday with snow and ice. Getting up that hill is one scary chore; maneuvering their hairpin narrow driveway, which is also steep, is another scare. But once you arrive, it's worth it. Sitting at the dining room table and looking out the picture window at the pines and the snow and the kids was like a taste of heaven.
As I had thought, there were 14 of us. We all enjoy each other's company, and the kids all play together, very loudly but well. Nobody fights, nobody argues, probably because there is no alcohol. Aside from the kids, I think I'm the only non-drinker there.
The day was blustery cold with several inches of snow. It actually warmed up to 30* then quickly plunged into the teens. The wind chill factor hovered near zero, and yet the day was perfect. We can hardly wait for Christmas Day when we'll do this all again.
