BLOODY REMINDERS
A bloody Russian toddler. ........................................... Little H.
I am still haunted by the bloody hostages in Russia, the little children whose innocent lives meant less than nothing to the terrorists. I can’t help but think what I would be going through if Little H were one of those children, the all-consuming terror/fear of what he must be going through while the rest of us become hysterical with an all-consuming frustration of not being able to do anything but wait. This has affected me even more than 9/11 because this happened at a children’s school, and the terror they endured lasted well over two days with no food and no water the entire time. Three-year-old Little H still cries sometimes when his parents leave. I cared for him this afternoon while his parents took a short motorcycle trip, and he cried when they left without him. I couldn’t help but think of the little Russian children. Nurse G doesn’t even want to hear about it.
I wonder if terror’s apologists will claim that Russia must have brought this upon themselves much in the same way they blame the USA for 9/11. Will Michael Moore make a crockumentary, maybe call it “Bowling For Beslan”?
My heart just aches for those children and their families. Those children’s lives should be filled with laughter, not terror and fear. Will they ever recover?
WHEN THE KILLERS COME FOR THE KIDS
By Ralph Peters
THE mass murder of children revolts the human psyche. Herod sending his henchmen to massacre the infants of Bethlehem haunts the Gospels. Nothing in our time was crueler than what the Germans did to children during the Holocaust. Slaughtering the innocents violates a universal human taboo.
Or a nearly universal one. Those Muslims who preach Jihad against the West decided years ago that killing Jewish or Christian children is not only acceptable, but pleasing to their god when done by "martyrs."
It isn't politically correct to say this, of course. We're supposed to pretend that Islam is a "religion of peace." All right, then: It's time for Muslims to stand up for the once-noble, nearly lost traditions of their faith and condemn what Arab and Chechen terrorists and blasphemers did in the Russian town of Beslan.
If Muslim religious leaders around the world will not publicly condemn the taking of children as hostages and their subsequent slaughter — if those "men of faith" will not issue a condemnation without reservations or caveats — then no one need pretend any longer that all religions are equally sound and moral.
…
An attack on children is an attack on all of humanity.
No matter what differences Western states discover to divide them, the terrorists will bring us together in the end. Their atrocities expose all wishful thinking for what it is.
…
And what will terror's apologists say when the killers come for their own children?
For something closer to home:
APPLE 'TERROR BY FUEL TRUCK' TIP
Al Qaeda plans to use fuel-laden trucks to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building and one of the tunnels to New Jersey between Sept. 24 and Oct. 10, an anonymous tipster recently warned federal authorities.

AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER WEEK
Smile and I’ll buy you a Tootsie Pop.
An unbelievable week. The Republican Convention went off without a hitch, leaving many of us in a state of renewed ebullience. And yet, for me, the little Russian children hostage situation, days without food or water, was the most gripping story this week. It served as a bloody backdrop to the festivities in NY, a reminder of extent to which terrorists will go. My heart aches for the parents of those children. Hundreds are believed to be dead. I heard that when the terrorists realized that it was over, they began shooting as many as possible. There is no better illustration of the need to keep Bush in office than that tragedy, for Bush is committed to do whatever is necessary to fight terrorism.
Alleged Terrorist Lynched by Mob Outside Beslan School Building.
Clinton is scheduled for bypass surgery. Maybe the news of Kerry’s petty midnight performance, an act of desperation, was too much for Slick’s ticker. Normally I'd say that the news probably left him bent out of shape, but according to Paula Jones, he was already like that.
Blue heard that Rush is dating Daryn Kagan of CNN. Can anybody confirm this?

ONE HELLUVA CONVENTION!
I had said that I would not watch the convention … I never watch conventions anymore … but boy am I glad that I did! I haven’t felt this good in months. We’ll be talking about Arnold’s girlie men and Zell’s spitballs for years. The contrast between the unwashed workers, peasants, and toiling intelligentsia outside and the uninhibited euphoria inside is the difference between Democrats and Republicans, between Kerry and Bush. As a speaker, Bush may not be a Zell or an Arnold, but he nonetheless gave an impassioned address last night which Kerry can only dream about. That’s because Bush has emotion and Kerry has 5 mansions and a private plane and an $8,000 Serotta bike and handmade shoes and …
Here’s a rundown of the reviews.
8 BUSH: 'I'LL NEVER RELENT'
By Deborah Orin
"I will never relent in defending America — whatever it takes," Bush said in a prime-time speech in the city that changed his presidency on 9/11.
"We have fought the terrorists across the earth — not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake," Bush said at Madison Square Garden.
"We are staying on the offensive — striking terrorists abroad — so we do not have to face them here at home. And we will prevail."
…
His speech marked the starting gun for the fall campaign and rival Sen. John Kerry — slipping behind in polls — hit back in an extraordinarily sharp personal attack by charging that Bush is "unfit" to lead the nation.
…
Gloom was spreading over Democrats amid reports that Bush is now several points up in the swing state of Missouri and edging ahead in Ohio and even Pennsylvania, which Gore easily won in 2000.
"Everybody is just depressed — Kerry has no message and even worse, they don't appear to have a tragedy," said a veteran Democratic strategist, lamenting Kerry's fumbling responses to attacks on his Vietnam war and antiwar record.
8 MASTERSTROKE
By John Podhoretz
THE world will little note nor long remember George W. Bush's speech last night. It wasn't his finest hour by a long shot, though it did feature a remarkably moving account of the sacrifices of the families of veterans who have fought for freedom since 9/11.
…
And he provided a stunning grace note to end the convention with his tribute to this city's spiritual triumph after the terrorist attacks. "For as long as our country stands," he said, "people will look to the resurrection of New York City and they will say: Here buildings fell, and here a nation rose."
For the most part, however, the speech was rhetorically flat.
But it was a political masterstroke nonetheless.
What Bush did, and at length, was to remind voters that there's been more to his presidency than the war.
…
Still, the president didn't go for Kerry's jugular by any means. Yet, only an hour after Bush finished, there was John Kerry live at a midnight rally in Ohio, going for the throats of Bush and Cheney himself.
8 BUSH'S BID FOR HISTORY
By Dick Morris
In a speech that was at once eloquent and substantive, sensitive and dynamic, profound and familiar, Bush has risen to a level few presidents have ever reached
…
The speech satisfied every single political need. He contrasted with Kerry without appearing negative. He demonstrated emotion without pandering. He rose to a level of substantive specificity without becoming wonkish.
…
I voted for Gore in 2000, as a true child of the Clinton era. But I decided to vote for Bush on Sept. 12, 2001 when I saw how he handled the threat we face. I used to back Bush because he offered safety; now I support him because he summons us all to an ideal. Before he spoke, supporting Bush was a duty one owed to the fallen. Now, it is an honor.
8 Second Half Comeback
By David Hogberg
If a speech isn't a barnburner throughout, then it should save the best for last. That is what President Bush did last night.

GIVE ‘EM ZELL, MILLER!
This was THE speech last night. I mean, really, was there any other? The "spitballs" reference will be laughed about for decades. Zell wrapped up Kerry's pathetic war policy ramblings in a tidy little bundle with that one word. How effective was Zell? Susan Estrich, in a raging review, gave Rudy a ZERO the night before. But last night, in a mouth-foaming rabid rant, she ammended Rudy's rating so she could give Zell the zero.
Text of Zell Miller's Speech at RNC
Now, while young Americans are dying in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrat's manic obsession to bring down our Commander in Chief.
…
Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator.
And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators.
…
But don't waste your breath telling that to the leaders of my party today. In their warped way of thinking America is the problem, not the solution.
…
This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces?
U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?
…
I first got to know George Bush when we served as governors together. I admire this man. I am moved by the respect he shows the first lady, his unabashed love for his parents and his daughters, and the fact that he is unashamed of his belief that God is not indifferent to America.
I can identify with someone who has lived that line in "Amazing Grace," "Was blind, but now I see," and I like the fact that he's the same man on Saturday night that he is on Sunday morning.
He is not a slick talker but he is a straight shooter and, where I come from, deeds mean a lot more than words.
I have knocked on the door of this man's soul and found someone home, a God-fearing man with a good heart and a spine of tempered steel.

8 Miller & Matthews:
Matthews says, "Senator, can I speak softly to you..."
Miller retorts, "No, no, no. Because you won't give me a chance to answer, you ask these questions and then you just talk over what I'm trying to answer like you did that woman the other day. I don't know why I even came on this program."
To which Matthews replies, "Well, I'm glad you did." Miller actually looks kind of angry. Matthews says, "Can I ask you this..." and is interrupted by Miller, "Are you gonna shut up after you ask me?"

TAKE THAT, YOU GIRLIE MEN!
There are several noted Republicans this morning who must be thanking their lucky stars that it is unconstitutional for foreign-born citizens to become president. Arnold was that good. I don’t agree with him on several issues, but he makes me feel good. Positive, upbeat people can win elections; negative mopes can not. Bush is definitely positive, Kerry is definitely not. And Arnold was positively electric.
GOV. ARNOLD FLEXES STAR POWER WITH HEAVY-DUTY BUSH BOOST
"American gave me opportunities and my immigrant dreams came true," the Austrian-born Schwarzenegger said as a massive American flag rippled on the video screen behind him. "Everything I have — my career, my success, my family — I owe to America."
…
He offered a litmus test for his fellow immigrants to tell if they held Republican principles in their heart — and said one measure is faith in a free market.
To the naysayers criticizing the economy, "I say: Don't be economic girlie men!" he said.
…
And he regaled in the moment he took the oath of citizenship 21 years ago.
"I was so proud that I walked around with the American flag around my shoulders all day," he recalled.
"That's why I believe in this country, that's why I believe in this party — and that's why I believe in this president."
THE WORMS IN THE BIG APPLE
PUNKS, PROTESTS & THE NYPD
A mob of lowlifes pummeled one cop at the end of a protest by the so-called Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign — a protest that, inexplicably, was allowed to take place despite a lack of proper permits.
The officer, who was hospitalized with head wounds, was one of a group of scooter cops who went to the rescue of a female colleague who'd been surrounded by hooligans on West 30th Street.
The mob threw metal barricades at the cops, knocked one off his bike, then proceeded to punch and kick him.
But here's the most telling twist: Video of the incident showed that someone in a neon-green painter's cap was standing next to the assailant — who has not yet been caught — and had a "clear view of the incident," according to cops.
Maybe you've noticed folks wearing caps like that: They're self-proclaimed "legal observers" from the far-left National Lawyers Guild, and they say their job is to protect anti-Republican protesters from alleged police brutality.
When it comes to protecting the cops from the protesters' brutality, though, it seems they couldn't care less.
Indeed, the "legal observer" has yet to come forward. (No surprise there.)
…
Certainly, a large heaping of credit is due to one jurist who refused to turn a blind eye to the lawlessness: Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Patricia Nunez set hefty bail for the cretin who torched a papier-maché dragon outside Madison Square Garden Sunday, injuring a cop who may have suffered nerve damage.
Judge Nunez set bail at a $200,000 bond or $100,000 cash for Yusuke Banno, charged with inciting a riot, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer — despite obscene taunts from the defendant's colleagues in the courtroom.
Not only that, but the judge also refused to arraign three other protesters arrested with Banno who wouldn't give cops their names.
GIVE THIS MAN A SCOTCH!
A RUDY SPEECH WE SADLY MISSED
YOU'D think that drinking scotch be fore a speech could be a dangerous cocktail, but had Rudy Giuliani imbibed a little booze before his RNC barn-burner, it might have been infinitely more interesting. After his address Monday night, Giuliani hosted a private cigar party at the Grand Havana Room, where he relaxed with a Montecristo and a glass of premium scotch. He joked to our spy that if he had downed the scotch before his speech, "I really would have told the country what I think of John Kerry."
WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ MESSAGE
Kerry has a message problem, as in he doesn’t have one. A must read if only to see how CrushKerry worked in the word “ejaculate” (I kid you not) into their analysis.
The Kerry Campaign's Message Problem
Worse for Kerry, the rhetorical threshold has been set so high, we at crushkerry.com wonder what America’s most liberal Senator can possibly tell undecided voters about George W. Bush that would cause them to turn away. They have already been told by Kerry-supporting leftists that Bush is Hilter, that he knew about 9-11 in advance, that he entered an illegal war for oil to enrich his friends, that he is secretly in cahoots with the bin Laden clan, that he secretly has Osama bin Laden in captivity, that he lied us into war with Iraq, that he is a racists, that he is a murder. Top that John Kerry.
IF AL FRANKEN SCREAMS DOES ANYONE LISTEN?
SILENT SCREAM
AL Franken will find out how small his listenership is tomorrow when President Bush takes the podium to accept his party's presidential nomination. The comedian-cum-activist is calling on fellow anti-Bushies to open their windows and scream at the top of their lungs, with different sayings for different states. New Yorkers are instructed to yell "fuggedaboudit!" Franken calls the stunt the Great American Shout-Out, and tells us he's expecting 100 million Americans to participate: "Anything else would be a disappointment. You'll be able to hear it on the convention floor." Better buy earplugs.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY
8 Protesters' Encounters With Delegates on the Town Turn Ugly
Outside a hotel in Times Square, delegates to the Republican National Convention were swarmed by protesters dressed in black and swearing at them. Blocks away, delegates engaged in shoving matches with protesters seeking to spoil their night at the theater. And outside "The Lion King" on 42nd Street, a delegate was punched by a protester who ran by.
…
The harassment of delegates came as organized protests continued to draw thousands of people. The Still We Rise march by advocates for social issues was peaceful, and a Poor People's March, a column several blocks long, proceeded from the United Nations to the Madison Square Garden yesterday after the police decided to let it go ahead without a permit.
When marchers approached the Garden, a police detective was knocked off his scooter. He was then repeatedly kicked and punched in the head by at least one male demonstrator, the police said.
The detective, William Sample, was listed in serious condition at St. Vincent's Manhattan Hospital, where Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly both visited him, the police said. There was no immediate word of an arrest in the assault, but as of 9 p.m., the police said there had been 11 protest-related arrests.
8 PARTY LIES
SOME downtown promoters don't want anything to do with RNC-related events for fear of alienating their liberal crowd. GBH's Alejandro Torio, who throws parties at Lotus, tells PAGE SIX, "It's a numbers game, and 5 out of 6 people in this city are Democrats." Money won't change his mind: "We got approached by an event organizer from Washington to do an RNC after-party at a big Chelsea club, but it's suicidal. He offered us a ton of money, but I lied and told him I was a left-wing pinko communist," says Torio, who is actually a Republican.
8 Internet posts of delegates' info leads to probe
The Secret Service is investigating an Internet posting of some Republican delegates' phone numbers, e-mail addresses and the hotels where they would stay during the party's national convention, federal law enforcement officials said Monday.
In addition to the personal information, an anonymous statement said the delegates were "not welcome in New York City" and suggested that protesters should use the information "in whatever way they see fit."
8 Police brace for day of disobedience after ugly turn in protests that left detective injured
Police are bracing for more confrontations with protesters after a violent march to Madison Square Garden in which a plainclothes detective was pushed from his scooter and pummeled by a protester, witnesses and authorities said.
…
Police were preparing for further unrest Tuesday as protesters promised to demonstrate wherever delegates and Republican Party heavyweights were celebrating and sightseeing.
In the months leading up to the convention, activists designated Tuesday an official day of civil disobedience, planning sit-ins, street theater and even vandalism aimed at the offices of corporations with links to the Bush family or the Republican Party. They planned to start early in the day by harassing Republicans at a breakfast at the Tavern on the Green restaurant in Central Park.
8 Join us as we make history in the streets of New York City!
What will happen on August 31st?
We will turn the streets of NYC into stages of resistance and forums for debate. We are calling for actions focusing on Republican events throughout the day. We are asking all New Yorkers to join us in the streets on this day. If you don't want to risk the streets, we ask that you at least participate from the sidewalks.
LET’S ROLL!
I wasn’t going to watch. I never watch conventions. It’s the same old rah-rah reception for long, lousy speeches. Then the commentators tell you what you already heard and what they thought it all meant, as though you were brain-dead. When the hoopla is over, the story turns to the anemic ratings of the festivities, making you question why you even bother watching in the first place. Just watch Taxi reruns or Barney Miller, for crissakes. But there I was last night watching the convention with all its hoopla, and I gotta admit that it wasn’t half bad. McCain sounded, and looked, subdued, almost pained, yet gave a solid endorsement of Bush; no questions about it. His blistering barb at Michael Moore, and the reaction amongst the delegates, loosened him up and he actually smiled. Rudy’s speech was a great speech, maybe a bit long, but still a great speech. However, he’s at his best when he’s unscripted, especially in interviews.
But the speech I found to be the best was delivered by Ron Silver. If I hadn’t known before, I never would have believed he makes his living as an actor. Last night he was stiff and seemed ill at ease, yet his message was by far the most powerful of the night. Before 9/11, Silver was a liberal, the guy who looked up at the planes overhead at Clinton’s ’92 inaugural and proclaimed, “Hey, those are our planes now.” Being a liberal in his business is a prerequisite; bucking the system can cost you work. Endorsing Bush has cost Silver jobs, yet he stood there last night and chastised his fellow actors for their narrow political vision. That was powerful.
And for all you liberals who warned us not to “politicize 9/11” at the convention: SHOVE IT!
RUDY
He's become a single-name entity: Rudy. He's earned it.
STEMWINDER
By John Podhoretz
Did he get carried away? You bet. He did some odd pantomime, he got somewhat repetitious and he couldn't quite bring himself to wrap it up. But there was something really fresh about watching a major convention speech that wasn't pre-programmed campaign boilerplate, as so many are.
The unsung hero of the night was the poor shnook running his speech on the TelePrompTer, who had to keep up with Rudy as he kept riffing off script in response to the enthusiasm expressed by the delegates. I was watching him speak from a position behind the podium on the floor, where I could see his TelePrompTer script, and I'd estimate 15 to 20 percent of the speech was ad-libbed.
…
The Giuliani speech featured all the themes that will be repeated throughout the convention and the 64-day election season. He reminded delegates of the days after 9/11 and the way the president rose to the occasion. He ran through the history of the West's weak response to terrorism, dating back to the 1972 Olympics, to make clear just how profoundly George W. Bush has changed the terms of the discussion.
A CHANGED MAN
Remember this from '92? “Hey, those are our planes now.”
Remarks by Ron Silver
Even though I am a well-recognized liberal on many issues confronting our society today, I find it ironic that many human rights advocates and outspoken members of my own entertainment community are often on the front lines to protest repression, for which I applaud them but they are usually the first ones to oppose any use of force to take care of these horrors that they catalogue repeatedly.
Under the unwavering leadership of President Bush, the cause of freedom and democracy is being advanced by the courageous men and women serving in our Armed Services. The President is doing exactly the right thing. That is why we need this President at this time!

IS AMAZON BIASED AGAINST THE VETS?
I heard about this on Fox News tonight. This is the only book, I understand, for which they’ve suspended their customer review policies. For example, their rules still apply for Brinkley's "Tour Of Duty."
Important note from Amazon.com:
We've decided to suspend our normal customer review policies and rules for this title. For example, we usually prohibit ad hominem attacks. That policy in particular seems to be incompatible with presidential election year politics. Therefore, short of obscenities, reviews on this book are now a free-for-all. We take no responsibility for the following discussion. Aren't presidential election years great? Have fun!
AM I EARLY?

WELCOME TO THE RNC WEEK
Do you really think that any of these crazies will effect votes for Kerry?
The View From Downtown
By Paul Beston
I walked a few blocks west to Union Square, traditional home of radical activists, and took in some of the sights.
The remarkable thing about the Left is that the character and form of their demonstrations never really change. There are certain things you can almost always count on at these gatherings.
You can count, first of all, on drums. The Left loves drums, possibly because they conjure up tribal, Third World associations, but also, I suspect, because of their paramilitary aspect. And drums are noisy, too, which increases the likelihood that they will annoy others and disturb the peace. A Leftist demo without drums is like a boxing match without blood.
You can usually count on puppet shows or some other form of performance art. Many of the folks on the radical left are frustrated artists, and this is their chance to shine.
…
You can count on political incoherence, like the table set up to gather signatures against H.R. bill 163 and Senate bill 89, to reinstate the draft. This was the bill introduced nearly two years ago by Congressmen Charles Rangel of Harlem. Nothing has been done on it since it was introduced in January of 2003, and nothing will be. But the man at the table talked about it as if it were an imminent threat. I wonder if he knew that the bill's co-sponsors include such Lefty stalwarts as Nydia Velasquez, John Conyers, and Sheila Jackson-Lee?
…
There's still plenty of time for trouble, and no doubt there are those out there eager to make it. But after Sunday, I feel a bit more optimistic, and more inclined to second the views of one of the police officers I spoke with at Union Square.
"These are people whose parents didn't show them enough attention when they were kids. Look at the monster they created!"

BUSH BOUNCE A'BUILDING
By Dick Morris
AFTER one of the weakest convention performances in memory, John Kerry has had the worst post-convention period since Walter Mondale found himself defending Geraldine Ferraro's husband's business accounting in 1984.
Even before the gavel pounds opening the 2004 Republican Convention, the Kerry bounce is over and President Bush enters the first day of his conclave with a lead in most national polls. (He's four ahead in the L.A. Times poll and three up in Rasmussen's daily tracking survey.)
…
How will Bush do in the debates? My bet is: quite well. Will Kerry be able to close in October? My bet is: yes, but not all the way. But that uncertainty is what makes politics fun, especially this year.
Bush Bounce
By David Hogberg
Although the Bush Campaign has its shortcomings, managing expectations is not one of them. All along Bush operatives have been insisting that 2004 would be a close campaign.
…
Now the Bush operatives claim that don't expect their campaign to get a bounce from the Republicans' own convention this week. This is surely wise strategy, as it will both keep them from looking like fools and prevent the base from feeling disappointed if no bounce materializes. Yet it is also not very believable. Most of the important factors increasingly point to a Bush bounce after the convention.

THE WELCOME MAT
From Drudge: TIME OUT mag banned by convention organizers after cover shows elephant's rear end and pile of poop...
After 9/11, NYC begged the Repubs to choose their fair city, so they did. So much for the city's appreciation. What can y'say? At least they're honest. Just keep one thing in mind, though, that most of the protesters live elsewhere.
JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD SEEN IT ALL
John Hawkins, at RightWingNews, has posted an ad for … I kid you not … Child’s Pimp & Ho Costumes. Which brings up a subject near and dear to my heart: appropriate children’s clothing in general. Try to find decent, reasonably priced children’s clothing and you’re apt to find navel baring slut rags for toddlers. How about a gold lame winter jacket, with faux leopard collar, for a 3-year-old? However, what John found is truly vile. In this day and age, what parent would willing dress their 4-year-old little girl in a “Ho” costume? Yes, folks, the hos begin at size 4! Didn’t order yours yet? Too bad; they’re SOLD OUT! Check those prices, too.
Child’s Pimps & Hos on Halloween
What kind of execrable piece of trash would buy a Halloween costume like this for their kid? And before you start to wonder, no, this isn't satire....
...
Due to overwhelming demand, our child ho costume is currently sold out. However, we are currently accepting preorders. All preorders will arrive in time for Halloween 2004.
SAINTS PRESERVE US!
WARNING: GAG ALERT!
The Clintons … both of ‘em … do church.
"...Former President, William J. Clinton will address the congregation during the worship service on Sunday, August, 29, 2004. Dr. Forbes will introduce Mr. Clinton as part of an anouncement about the current Mobilization 2004 campaign to recover America's spiritual, moral and democratic values. United States Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton will also attend the service."
And now a joke to cleanse the palate:
Senator Hillary Clinton was attending a party, when she noticed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. She walked over to him, and in a quiet voice said, "If you were my husband I would poison your drink."
Schwarzenegger smiled, leaned forward, and whispered in her ear, "And if you were my wife I would drink it."
