Notable wit Oscar Wilde is born today in 1854. Celebrated for his talents and damned for his personal life, Wilde was a great hit with English society, who he satirised in such plays as "The Importance of Being Earnest". After beginning a homosexual affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, he made the mistake of suing Douglas's father for libel, lost and was convicted of 'gross indecency', receiving a two-year prison sentence. After his release, he lived abroad for the remainder of his life, dying in Paris in 1900.

IN WRITING
Saddam bankrolled Palestinian terrorists
Key points
• Documents show Saddam funded Palestinian terrorist group
• Syrian business front funded terrorists through UN oil-for-food programme
• 1991 tape reveals Saddam wanted to use biological weapons against Israel
SADDAM Hussein’s links to terrorism have been proven by documents showing he helped to fund the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The PFLP, whose history of terrorism dates back to the "black September" hijackings of 1970, was personally vetted by Saddam to receive oil vouchers worth £40 million.
The deal has been uncovered by US investigators, trawling millions of pages of documents showing a network of diplomats bribed by Saddam’s regimes, and political parties who qualified for backhanded payments from Baghdad.
The Iraq Survey Group (ISG), which is still working its way through 20,000 boxes of documents from Saddam’s Baath party discovered only recently, found a list of pressure groups bankrolled by Saddam.
Using the United Nations’ own oil-for-food scheme - ironically intended as a sanction to control the behaviour of his dictatorship - Saddam gave Awad Ammora & Partners, a Syrian company, two million barrels of oil.

NRA ENDORSES BUSH
In this year`s election, the question isn`t whether we are safer now than we were four years ago. We already know the answer. Sure we are and that`s because of President Bush. AL'S HOT AIR
LIBERAL laugh-riot Al Franken is super unpopular with staffers at the Sundance Channel, which televises his Air America radio show. "Everyone at Sundance hates him," an insider tells PAGE SIX. "For one thing, they're [bleeped] off that so much airtime is being devoted to Franken instead of independent film. He's got nothing to do with their programming." In addition, "He's such a busybody. He obsesses over every single promo and laughs uproariously at his own bad jokes. He thinks he's hilarious. And he's so bossy during the editing process." A rep for Sundance had "no comment."
Poll Vaulting
President George W. Bush jumped to a four point lead over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry after the final debate between the White House rivals, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released October 15, 2004. Bush led Kerry 48-44 percent in the three-day tracking poll, which included one night of polling done after Wednesday's debate. (Reuters Graphic)
The Bush Recovery
By David Hogberg
For those of you who read my last column and are Bush supporters, you might have felt a bit discouraged. You might even be bordering on depression if you saw some Chicago Tribune polls showing John Kerry grabbing a lead in Ohio and Wisconsin. Don't be. The fact is Kerry is on the tail end of the bounce he received from the first debate.
…
The first debate is sinking from sight. The undercurrent of Kerry's weakness on national security is now, with the aid of Kerry himself, reemerging. The most recent CBS-New York Times poll now shows Bush leading again, 48-45%.
Two tracking polls, Rasmussen and Zogby, reveal a similar trend. Rasmussen showed Kerry pulling even a week ago, and now shows Bush with a lead. Zogby had Kerry in the lead a few days ago, but yesterday had Bush pulling slightly ahead. The state polls often lag the national ones, but it won't be much longer before Bush begins to gain on Kerry there as well.
4 STARS
PUPPET MASTERS
TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE
A riot - with strings attached.
Their consistently hilarious, relentlessly potty-mouthed "Team America: World Police," about a team of gung-ho American commandos fighting to stop North Korean leader Kim Jong Il from selling WMDs to terrorists, aims its satirical big guns and fires at will.
True believers on both sides of the political fence are sprayed - Hollywood's most prominent pacifists are probably already
…
Team America's ham-fisted attempts at policing the world provoke the ire of the Film Actors Guild (or F.A.G.), headed by Alec Baldwin and featuring puppet versions of Sean Penn, Janeane Garofalo, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen and Matt Damon, among others
…
Kim Jong Il, portrayed as a stereotypical James Bond villain who spouts obscenities and sounds suspiciously like "South Park's" Cartman, is without doubt the funniest character in "Team America," and his sad little ditty about it being "rone-ry" at the top absolutely kills.
…
(look closely, and you'll see the cobblestones in the Parisian streets are shaped like croissants)
…
So, who's going to hate this film?
Michael Moore, who is portrayed as a suicide bomber with a hot dog in each hand and a mustard-smeared mug.
Half of liberal Hollywood, whose puppet images are variously impaled, torched, decapitated or shot.
Fans of country music. Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay, whose "Pearl Harbor" is mercilessly lampooned. Patriots. Those offended by four-letter words and scatological humor.
Who's going to love it?
Anyone with a sense of humor: "Team America: World Police" is hands-down the funniest movie of the year.

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
Kerry Lesbian Remark Angers Cheney
You’ve heard the story by now. First John Edwards calls Mary Cheney a lesbian. Apparently John Kerry hadn’t gotten the message that Edwards’ pronunciation was a colossal mistake, because last night Kerry called her a lesbian, too. Dick Cheney is "a pretty angry father." Lynn Cheney ‘called Kerry "not a good man" and his remarks about daughter Mary Cheney "a cheap and tawdry political trick."’ Elizabeth Edwards, supposed the sane one in Kamp Kerry, said ‘that Mrs. Cheney might feel "a certain degree of shame" because her daughter is a lesbian.’ So ACE wants to know:
Does Kerry owe Miss Cheney an apology?
What do you think?

LOSER
From Cindy Adams’ column:
MICHAEL Jackson. In case you don't know, in case you didn't hear, he reached out for legal wrangler Roy Black. Roy Black turned him down. Not opposed to publicity, this lawyer rarely turns a deaf ear or wallet to high-profile celebrity cases he can win. Remember the Marv Albert headlines? William Kennedy Smith rape charge? Roy Black turned Michael Jackson down. What this augurs, I have no idea. Wouldn't even hazard a guess. Mother is just telling you what she knows, kiddies.

Old school days long gone, but not forgotten: Congressman's streaking stunt exposed
The gloves have come off in a tight election race between two Texas congressmen -- and every other article of clothing appears to be fair game as well.
Democrats are circulating old newspaper clippings of a 1974 college streaking stunt staged by hundreds of students at what was then called Southwest Texas State University.
One of the participants was an 18-year-old freshman named Pete Sessions -- who grew up to become a conservative Republican congressman.
A Sessions spokesman says the congressman's "old school days are long gone" and that he recognizes the streaking stunt was "an immature action."
But the campaign of Democrat Representative Martin Frost is holding his rival's bare body to the fire, saying he "exposed himself to children and strangers."
The two incumbents are battling each other in a new Republican-leaning district in the Dallas area. Frost, Texas' senior congressman, had his district redrawn by Republicans last year.

Mike Gallagher to take on Michael Moore
Posted on Thu, Oct. 07, 2004
When conservative radio talk show host Mike Gallagher caught wind that Michael Moore was coming to Penn State with the help of student fees, he made on-air plans for a "counter event" in Happy Valley.
Gallagher expressed outrage during his nationally syndicated radio show Wednesday that student funds were being used to pay for Moore's appearance. He vowed to come to Penn State to fund-raise the exact the amount needed to bring Moore to town and "top it by a penny," said Jason Hiatt, producer of Gallagher's show. All the money raised will be used to buy "care packages" and other necessities for the soldiers in Iraq, he said.
…
By Wednesday afternoon, Gallagher's Web site, MikeOnline.com, sported a link where people could donate to his State College fundraiser.

Nuclear? In Iraq? I thought we were told that there weren’t any nuclear materials in Iraq!
Nuclear weapons materials 'vanish from Iraq'
EQUIPMENT and materials that could be used to make nuclear weapons are disappearing from Iraq but neither Baghdad nor Washington appears to have noticed, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog agency reported yesterday.
Satellite imagery shows that entire buildings that once housed high-precision equipment have been dismantled.
Equipment and materials helpful in making bombs have also been removed from open storage areas in Iraq and disappeared without a trace, according to the satellite pictures, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a report to the UN Security Council.
The warning comes just days after a CIA report detailed how armed insurgent groups in Iraq are trying to get their hands on weapons of mass destruction.

SORORITIES all over the country are in for a treat. Starting tomorrow, studly John Kerry stepson Chris Heinz and his handsome buddy Jamie Whitehead (Kerry's New York campaign finance manager) are touring college campuses in the "swing states," starting in Colorado. We hear that sororities at Ohio State University are catfighting over who will host the studs' tailgating party for the big OSU football game the week of Oct. 25. By Halloween, the duo and their luxury camper van will be in West Virginia — after which they'll escape to the Heinz family farm in Pittsburgh for a little rest and recuperation.
SMOKING GUN
By John Podhoretz
CONSERVATIVES are up in arms about the memo written by the chief politics producer at ABC News, which leaked out on Friday. They shouldn't be. Mark Halperin's memo is very useful: It reveals as no other document ever has the existence of a deeply ingrained double standard in the way political news is reported in the United States.
Simply put, Republicans and conservatives are subject to exacting scrutiny of their actions, while Democrats and liberals are treated with far greater leniency.

STOLEN HONOR
Broadcast Group to Pre-empt Programs for Anti-Kerry Film
Up to 62 television stations owned or managed by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group - many of them in swing states - will show a documentary highly critical of Senator John Kerry's antiwar activities 30 years ago within the next two weeks, Sinclair officials said yesterday.
…
Called "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal," the documentary features Vietnam veterans who say their Vietnamese captors used Mr. Kerry's 1971 Senate testimony, in which he recounted stories of American atrocities, prolonging their torture and betraying and demoralizing them. Similar claims were made by prisoners of war in a commercial that ran during the summer from an anti-Kerry veterans group, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
…
But acknowledging that news standards call for fairness, Mr. Hyman said an invitation has been extended to Mr. Kerry to respond after the documentary is shown. "There are certainly serious allegations that are leveled; we would very much like to get his response," he said.
Asked if Sinclair would consider running a documentary of similar length either lauding Mr. Kerry, responding to the charges in "Stolen Honor" or criticizing Mr. Bush, Mr. Hyman said, "We'd just have to take a look at it."
Aides to Mr. Kerry said he would not accept Sinclair's invitation.
"It's hard to take an offer seriously from a group that is hellbent on doing anything to help elect President Bush even if that means violating basic journalism standards," said Chad Clanton, a Kerry spokesman.
NOT TOO SHARP
This election was supervised by the U.N.
Sharpies at the U.N.
By Jed Babbin
The Afghan election -- an otherwise wonderful and historic event -- is now in dispute because the U.N. didn't have Sharpies handy.
…
The U.N. was supposed to be monitoring and assuring the validity of the Afghan election in which Hamid Karzai and about seventeen others were vying for the presidency of this war-ravaged nation. The U.N. failed. Not because of violence in the polling places, though there surely was some. Not because hundreds of thousands of Afghanis quailed at the terrorists' threats of murder if they tried to vote, because they didn't. The U.N. failed because its infallible, impartial, and professional election monitors planned to mark the cuticle of one thumb of each voter with ink to show they'd voted and thus prevent them from voting again, and couldn't manage to get even that right.
…
THANK HEAVEN THAT the U.N. played no role in the Australian election last week. Prime Minister John Howard, who braved enormous political opposition to do it, joined Mr. Bush's Coalition of the Willing, and sent Aussie troops to Afghanistan and Iraq. His survival was long in doubt but the Aussies reelected him with a substantial margin of victory. Now, maybe President Bush can mention his name again with prominence in the final debate against Vichy John Kerry. Aussie liberals are shocked by their loss. Maybe they should think about it more. Their message didn't fail with the voters because it wasn't clear enough, or because they didn't articulate it well or loud enough. It failed because Aussies are practical people. They don't want terrorism at home, so they're willing to fight it at its source. So must we.
The U.N. had nothing to do with this one.
BUSH WINS AGAIN
By JOHN O'SULLIVAN
A Howard defeat would have been a setback for the Anglosphere, a disaster for the United States and a catastrophe for George W. Bush (and Tony Blair). And it would have been celebrated as such — make no mistake — by France, Germany, Middle Eastern despots, the United Nations, and the massed NGOs (non-governmental organizations) of the "international community."
But Howard won. Indeed, he won a landslide of sweeping proportions — something rare by the standards of the cautious Aussie electorate. After three terms in office — when the usual sentiment of voters is "Time for A Change" — Howard actually increased his majority to an unassailable 30 seats. He gained control of the Senate — the first time since 1981 that the Coalition has controlled both Houses.

The saga continues
The Clintons could be in a hep o' trouble.
Not only could a key witness cut a deal with federal prosecutors and give up Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign in a finance fraud case, Mrs. Clinton and former President Bill Clinton soon could find themselves in the docket in a serious civil lawsuit they desperately are hoping to stop:
The Justice Department says it has evidence that Hillary Clinton's 2000 campaign for the U.S. Senate deliberately low-balled costs associated with a fund-raising event. That, supposedly, to free up more money for electioneering.
Peter Paul, a three-time felon currently under indictment for stock fraud charges in New York, claims he underwrote most of the cost of the August 2000 star-studded Hollywood gala. Prosecutors say he did so in hopes of securing a presidential pardon that never came. Mr. Paul and the Clintons have denied the allegation. Clinton's campaign denies any fund-raising chicanery.
In a second matter, the Clintons have filed an appeal with the California Supreme Court in an attempt to stop a lawsuit filed by Paul. Acting on Paul's behalf, Judicial Watch contends Mr. Clinton reneged on a $17 million deal to work for two Paul Internet companies.
The lawsuit says none of Paul's expenses -- $2 million he spent to put on the Hollywood gala that also was part of the business deal -- were reported as required to the Federal Election Commission.
The Clinton saga continues.
More's the pity.
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME
Many of you just don’t care about this war.
By Jonah Goldberg
No one bothers to ask how it could be possible that Bush lied. How could he have known there were no WMDs? No one bothers to wonder why Tony Blair isn't a liar. Indeed, no one bothers to ask whether the Great Diplomat and Alliance Builder believes our oldest and truest allies Great Britain and Australia are lead by equally contemptible liars.
…
Oh, one more thing no one asks. How could Bush think he could pull this thing off? I mean, knowing as he did that there were no WMDs in Iraq, how could he invade the country and think no one would notice? And if he's capable of lying to send Americans to their deaths for some nebulous petro-oedipal conspiracy no intelligent person has bothered to make even credible, why on earth didn't he just plant some WMDs on the victim after the fact? If you're willing to kill Americans for a lie, surely you'd be willing to plant some anthrax to keep your job.
Oh, and guess what?
Iraqi militia to disarm
COALITION forces made a historic breakthrough in their campaign to quell the bloody unrest in Iraq last night, when one of the most powerful militias in the country announced they would begin handing over their deadly arsenal of weapons tomorrow.
Shi’ite insurgents, led by the rebel cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, confirmed they had reached a ceasefire deal with US forces following lengthy peace negotiations with American officials and the interim Iraqi government.
The fighters will start disarming within hours, in return for a US pledge to cease their bombardment of the Sadr City district of Baghdad, where the fiercely anti-American al-Sadr and his 3,000 strong "Mahdi Army" are holed-up.
