MY PUMPKIN-ETTE
I have luck growing some things, like most house plants. Even outdoors, I have something of a green thumb. I love growing sunflowers and marigolds and anything that climbs. I've always wanted a pumpkin patch because I absolutely love pumpkins. But pumpkins require a lot of space, and the vines tend to meander wherever they damn well please.
We have a gravel courtyeard out back, and in 1996 I decided to try planting pumpkins there. Like a mother hen rounding up her chicks, I kept nudging the vines back onto the gravel whenever they began to stray onto the lawn. I watered them faithfully and fed them Miracle Gro right on schedule. All my efforts and that puny pumpkin was the sum total of my labor. It was so tiny I had to use my macro lens to photograph the thing.

ANTICIPATION!
To look at that hillside it's difficult to think that in three weeks it will be at least partially, if not completely, bare.

OKTOBERFEST KITTY
Do you remember this, Blue? Notice what's missing? I got pissed at DogMan one day ;)
Blue took this when DogMan and I visited her one time when I was 28. We were going to a German Christmas thing, where everyone but moi spoke fluent German. So I sat at this table bored because I didn't understand anything. There was a young boy sitting across from me, and in between us was a HUGE platter of homemade German Christmas cookies. Well, I sneaked one and ate it, and boy was it ever delicious. So I took another ... and then another ... and another and ...
It wasn't long before that poor little boy became worried that I would eat them all, so he tried to sneak one and his mother slapped his hands. It was one of those few times when I felt like I had absolutely no control. I had eaten at least a third of that platter before the kid was allowed to have some. That embarrassing public faux pas cost me several pounds.

A RAINY DAY
In my hometown. In fact, we're due for several inches of rain this weekend. ugh.

Maybe this will cheer you up. Have you heard about a video showing Janet Jackson, in the nude, "playing her buttocks like bongos"? If you're interested, you can watch it here (follow the links). Butt, IMHO, it’s not what it’s … a’hem … cracked up to be. Like we all haven’t seen nude celebrities before.
I agree with John that those ads are FREAKY! And Larry agrees.
Remember that family singing group of the 70s called The Cowsills? Barry Cowsill had moved to New Orleans right before Katrina hit. He was scheduled to go into rehab about that time. Unfortunately, Barry Cowsill is now missing.
AN AGENT WALKS INTO A BOOKSTORE...
Interesting how lit agents choose books in book store. I agree with her on #1, but that's it.
How do you choose a book in a book store?

FLECKS OF COLOR
I think I can see NEW flecks of red/orange on the hillside, which just goes to prove that regardless of what's happening, life does go on.

This is a MUST SEE! Red Square, at ThePeople'sCube, has Mother Sheehan on video. Mother Moonbat: On Sunday, Sept. 18th … Cindy Sheehan's bus stopped at Lafayette Ave. Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, letting out a small pack of moonbats. Our trusty camera captured the event in a night-vision mode, complete with the sermon and a short interview with Mother Moonbat herself.
More clear evidence of Bush’s failed environmental policies: In his five short years as President, George Walker Bush has failed to address the cankerous, puss-filled sore that is global warming to such a willfully negligent degree that our planet is being ravaged by a spate of marauding cataclysms the likes of which we have not seen in recorded history!!
Hil's lawyers try to quash old report: Lawyers at the Washington firm Williams and Connolly who work for Cisnero and both Clintons have argued to judges overseeing the case that allegations of illegal activity, for which no charges were filed, should be snipped before the report is made public.
Here one day, gone the next: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton dumped her teen-marketing guru yesterday, after The Post revealed that the unconventional adviser had vilified 9/11 victims.
BROOKLYN BUSH BASHER'S MACHINE GUN: Police said [Bashiri Murray] ran, tossing the weapon under a car as he fled. When cops caught up to him, they also checked out his car and found "anti-President Bush and Condoleezza Rice paraphernalia" inside.

WWHD?
Lordy, you would have thought that President Bush had tried to kill the Pope judging by the Repubs' reaction. What would Harriet do? was the question yesterday, and no one really knew. Yet they self-imploded anyway while drawing up laundry lists of every single Bush grievance they could think of. I doubt one night's sleep has made any difference, if any of them could sleep after becoming so utterly unwound. Aaron finally admitted that many on the right lusted for a knock-down-drag-out blood-letting.

Hugh Hewitt says it best: Yes, I wanted Judge Luttig or Judge McConnell, but the president wanted Miers, and I don't for a minute believe it is because of friendship, but because of W's understanding of the importance of the Court.
The Perot Gene: Are we going to abandon Bush every single time we don't get that doggy in the window we want, go crying to some alternate Momma, and wind up scuttling the gains we have made? The Democrats must be loving this. Once again, spoiled and whiny Republicans are loading their weapons to shoot themselves in the foot.
Couric Uses Rush, Kristol to Put WH Spokesman on Hot Seat: There was Katie, putting WH spokesman Dan Bartlett on the hot seat. Nothing unusual about that. But rather than using allegations or statements coming from the left, Couric threw in Bartlett's face statements made by Rush and Bill Kristol.
How I missed this one when I initially posted is beyond me.
Don't misunderestimate Miers: President Bush is a politician trained in strategic thinking at Harvard Business School, and schooled in tactics by experience and advice, including the experience and advice of his father, whose most lasting political mistake was the nomination of David Souter. The nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court shows that he has learned his lessons well. Regrettably, a large contingent of conservative commentators does not yet grasp the strategy and tactics at work in this excellent nomination.
Lifson also wrote this classic, dated February 3, 2004.
GWB: HBS MBA: One final note on George W. Bush’s management style and his Harvard Business School background does not derive from the classroom, per se. One feature of life there is that a subculture of poker players exists. Poker is a natural fit with the inclinations, talents, and skills of many future entrepreneurs. A close reading of the odds, combined with the ability to out-psych the opposition, leads to capital accumulation in many fields, aside from the poker table.
By reputation, the President was a very avid and skillful poker player when he was an MBA student. One of the secrets of a successful poker player is to encourage your opponent to bet a lot of chips on a losing hand. This is a pattern of behavior one sees repeatedly in George W. Bush’s political career. He is not one to loudly proclaim his strengths at the beginning of a campaign. Instead, he bides his time, does not respond forcefully, a least at first, to critiques from his enemies, no matter how loud and annoying they get. If anything, this apparent passivity only goads them into making their case more emphatically.
Happy Rosh Hashanah.

THE SKY IS NOT FALLING, CHICKEN LITTLES!
I usually don’t do opinion pieces. They are the exception, not the rule. I prefer to post articles and give you a forum for discussion in the comment section.
President Bush’s choice of Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court has caused an uproar – with the Republicans! And that has riled me like few things have recently. Liberals hound Bush 24/7, but that’s to be expected. But this visceral reaction from the Repubs is not only insulting, it’s uncalled for and childish. She may be a stealth candidate to everyone but Bush, so have a bit of faith in his judgment. At this point, he’s earned it. So, to those of you who are whining about this, here’s my advice: 1) Get a grip, 2) get a life, and 3) try having some faith in President Bush.
Lorie, at Polipundit, says Take A Deep Breath: I say that the biggest problem now regarding her qualifications is that Democrats have amassed a wealth of quotes from conservatives today alone about how unqualified she is that if they do determine she is a Scalia or Thomas-like conservative they won’t even have to fight the ideology fight.
Miers is a born again Christian - Liberals run for your life :)

Paris Hilton is not potty trained. She joins an ever-growing list of leaky women: Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C and Exhibit D.
The adventures of P.I. Polly continues in her new job with the ME’s office: What I can tell you is how interesting it is for a 118 pound woman to move a 275 pound man from the ground to a cot, into a big ol' van, and then from the van to a tray at the morgue. All by myself. Well, sort of. I have some nice cops that help me get the guy on the cot in the first place. But after that it's all me.
I'm guessing this won't be covered under Hillary-care: Disabled Danes are being encouraged to make monthly visits to prostitutes and reclaim the cost from the taxpayer, under laws intended to guarantee them equal rights.

STILL GREEN
The first time I could take today's picture was 5:30 this afternoon when I returned from seeing my mother. (Poor dear has shingles now!) I left at 9-ish this morning, when it was very foggy. This time of year, the fog doesn't lift until at least mid-morning, sometimes later. As soon as I backed into my parking spot upon my return, I hopped out of the car and took the picture. My mother lives in 2.5 hrs. east of here in Central NY. The coloring there is at least a week ahead of us here.
Today was also the Finger Lakes Wine Marathon. It begins in Bath (NY), runs right by our home, and finishes in Corning. If you look at the map, we live between #20 and #21 (pdf file). They were placing the orange cones along our side of the road as I was leaving. Later in the morning, when DogMan was ready to take the dogs for their exercise, he noticed a man parking his pickup truck at the entrance of our drive. The guy was setting up a water station for the runners. So, DogMan asked him to please move his truck and got some attitude in return.
"Do you realize that this is the Wine Glass Marathon?"
So Dogman said, "Okay, I'll move you myself."
Then he climbed into his truck, with the dogs, and began backing out. Mr. Attitude moved his truck in a hurry :) I'll bet the guy voted for Kerry and eats tree bark.
I'm posting all the pictures here, as I take them, so you can more easily see the progress.
