I'M IN A WESTERN FRAME OF MIND
Wes Hightower and Sissy having a brew in Urban Cowboy. At least in the movie it was Wes and Sissy. She was waiting to hear from Bud, but that rich bitch Pam never gave him Sissy's note. However, looking at that picture, it definitely looks like Bud, not Wes.
How I love that movie. Honky tonks and that mechanical bull, all beefed up with a heady level of testosterone. Mind you, I don't drink, and the few times I tried to ride a horse I slid right off sideways with my legs still mightily clamped around the aged mare. DogMan laughed his ass off. I was so traumatized that now I'll first have to learn how to get within spittin' distance of one. But I'm still hoping to learn; it's one of my goals.
In the news ...

8 Snow day in Italy: We had a huge snowstorm here last night. It's probably the most snow I can remember seeing in my almost 6 years here. As you can imagine, the Italians re not handling it very well. Check out Rik's pictures!

FREY'S STORY FALLS TO PIECES
and Oprah's does, too.
In her best CYA mode, Oprah confronted the literary hoaxer du jour, James Frey, and tells him she feels "duped."
In an extraordinary reversal of her strident defense of the author whose book she catapulted to the top of the best-seller list, Oprah Winfrey said today she believed that the author James Frey "betrayed millions of readers" by making up elements of his life in his best-selling memoir, "A Million Little Pieces."
She added that she believed "I made a mistake" when she said that the truth of the book mattered less than its story of redemption.
"Made a mistake"? Who is she kidding? Could it be that others, like Mo Dowdy, have questioned her judgment on this? What a scam.

SOME CHOICE
Pat Hynes at AnkleBiters would vote for McCain over Her Royal C (figuratively speaking) “in a nano-second”: You all know my basic feelings about McCain. I'm no big fan and probably will not vote for him in the New Hampshire primary (someone better will come along, right? Right?) But I would vote for him in a nano-second over Hillary Clinton and any other Democrat who, at this time, is discussing the prospects of running for the presidency.
I agree with Rush that Hillary is far from an unbeatable candidate: I'm just trying to point out to you here that, despite all of this spin campaign that has been ginned up on [Hillary’s] behalf for the last 13 years, it hasn't worked, for a whole host of reasons, but the main reason is her. There's just not that much likable about her, and there really hasn't been.
Pat says: It's just the sine wave theory of political reporting. There's nothing to report on campaigns for the White House right now, so the chattering classes have to generate some buzz. Hillary will surf up and down on the sine wave for the next two years, but the buzz will always be about Hillary. Which is exactly the way she wants it.
Jonah Goldberg chimes in: LIBERALS ARE sizing up Hillary Clinton for the umpteenth time, and they don't like what they see.
HOWEVER, just for argument's sake, supposin' the Dems nominate Her Royal C. In order to beat HRC the Republicans will have to turn out in full force to vote, but for whom? God forbid, if the Republicans lose their minds and nominate McCainiac, for whom would you vote?

'Heartbreak Hotel' studio coming down
The Nashville recording studio where Elvis Presley cut the RCA hit Heartbreak Hotel, the King's first breakout hit, is being torn down to make way for that unmistakable sign of urban progress: A parking lot.
…
During Presley's Heartbreak Hotel session — which lasted only three hours and took place on Jan. 10, 1956, almost 50 years ago to the day — Presley also recorded Ray Charles' I Got A Woman, according to John Rumble, senior historian at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

GOOD NEWS FROM THE LEFT
They haven't figured out that that old Lefty playbook just isn't working for them anymore.
First the Gallup/CNN poll and now this. The show that was supposed to soften the public up to the idea of Her Royal C in '08 apparently is not catching on with the public.
Geezer appeal?: "[Commander In] Chief" has never been as strong in ratings among younger viewers as it is among older, less advertiser-desired audiences. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the median age of "Chief" viewers is 54.7, giving it the second-oldest audience on the network, behind "Dancing With the Stars."
Straight from a lefty blogger ...
Alito is inevitable...this is why we needed to win the 2004 election: This is the price we're paying for losing the 2004 presidential election. Did we not make it clear enough that the future direction of the court was at stake? Did John Kerry not understand that? (I'll avoid the general topic of what Kerry understood and did not understand...)

HO-HUM TUESDAY
That picture was the header on Dakota Pundit's blog. Alas, she blogs no more. Such a shame.
Busy today, but I do have a few mentions ...
8 Michael Moore breaks Canadian law
8 Drew Barrymore’s breasts did SNL
8 My mother is reading my short stories. She wasn't concerned a'tall with what Rita does at the end of this story, only that I had her turning tricks. Well! I was shocked that you wrote about a woman prostituting herself. Where on earth would you ever get such an idea? So I replied, Just wait ‘til you read “Rendezvous With Angelo.” Hope she has her nitro handy.
8 Howdy to B in Boise :~)

OF MICE AND MEN AND KATZ
I don't know which came first, my nickname Kitty or my love of cats. My first cat was Pepper, who lived to be 14. He died right before we moved out of a 13-room Victorian home into an apartment where we couldn't have pets. Four years later I married DogMan who proclaimed, NO CATS! I smiled sweetly and immediately drove out to a farm which had a new litter. I picked out a little black kitten, not caring what its sex was, and took it home. I can't remember their first meeting, but DogMan couldn't resist the little black furball. We named it Petruschka, from an old Spike Jones song "Rhapsody From Hunger(y)." (DogMan had quite a collection of Spike Jones on 78s. They cracked during a move.)
Since Petruschka, there have been Groucho Marx, Mama Cat, DiDi, Princess and Ichabod. There have been others, too. Strays, usually, who never stayed long. Mama Cat was a barn cat who lived in our garage for a few months. During a January thaw, which exposed a vast network of tunnels carved out by moles and field mice, she went on the hunting trip to end all hunting trips. Before mid-morning, she had deposited a mountain of dead critters at our side door. Catching them proved no challenge at all for her. We tried to move her with us, but she refused.
Princess was a barn cat for her first six months. She was originally Nurse G's cat, but we kept her when G went off to Elmira College (for her first degree). Princess was sickly, asthmatic even, and required a lot of doctoring before we could call her healthy. For several years she couldn't go outside as she would get sick. She'll be 16 this year. She's my shadow who sleeps with me.
This is all a segue for this charming piece about a barn cat named Mother, written by a man named Katz :~)
