RUN, KATIE, RUN!
'Free Katie' Campaign Gains Steam: Is Katie Holmes using her romance with Tom Cruise as a publicity stunt or is she just a starry-eyed victim of the press? A line of "Free Katie" shirts for sale at FreeKatie.net is the latest Hollywood-inspired clothing trend that capitalizes on the celebrity gossip du jour. The garments gained popularity shortly after Cruise's notoriously exuberant "Oprah" appearance in May when he proclaimed his love for Holmes by leaping on the talk show host's couch.
Has Tom seen Katie's gnarly feet? Eeeuuuww!

SIDNEY GOLDBERG
SIDNEY GOLDBERG
By John Podhoretz
Kind, friendly, amusing, amused, thoughtful, loving, clever, dapper,
jaunty, principled, intellectually engaged, politically astute, wise.
Sid was the ultimate mensch.
I loved him, my wife loved him, our baby daughter loved him, everybody loved him,
and the world is a smaller and colder and meaner place today without him.

WHISTLE BLOWER BLEW IT!
Chris, at LuckyDawgNews, has scooped the MSM on a big story in New Mexico!
.
Whistle Blower Beating Story Total B.S.
Tommy Hook (pictured right) was scheduled to testify before Congress about financial irregularities at Los Alamos labs. Alamos labs is a nuclear weapons lab. may recall Los Alamos labs being in the news before. This is the same place where sensitive national security secrets were stolen by Chinese spies when Bill Richardson, now Governor of New Mexico, ran the lab as head of the Dept. of Energy.
...
Back to Mr. Hook, was suppose to testify before Congress about financial shenanigans at the labs. stated that he was called by someone that wanted to give him some information about some improprieties at the labs. meeting was set up ata nudie bar in Santa Fe. I like how the mainstream media refer to it as a night club. The bar is called Cheeks. The name alone should let on that it's a strip club. According to Hook, he was jumped and beaten severely at the bar. The assailants told him not to testify before Congress. The entire story is B.S. !!!
Chris has posted all the juicy details, including a hilarious Al bundy audio clip, so be sure to read the whole thing. Here's how the MSM reported it, after Chris did. Way to go, Chris!

A LOSE-LOSE SUBJECT FOR REPUBS
The only reason I'm addressing this subject of HRC's alleged lesbian leanings ... and I do stress alleged ... is because this will be discussed and joked about since it's in this new Hillary book by Ed Klein. Titter about it amongst yourselves if you must, but doing so in public ... blogs, letters to editors, etc. ... will do no good for the Republicans. As Rush always says, we want to defeat the Dems and libs in the arena of ideas and issues. HRC will be a formidable candidate as it is; she's proven that she'll do anything to win. We don't need to give the Dems any ammo. Just a reminder: the linked article will be timed-out after today.
HILLARY BASHER IS ERROR PRONE
ED Klein's new hatchet-job book on Sen. Hillary Clinton says she was heavily influenced by the "culture of lesbianism" at her alma mater, Wellesley College — but a classmate of the former first lady tells us there was no such thing.
"The Truth About Hillary," to be published by Penguin's right-wing Sentinel imprint this month, makes much of Clinton's supposed lesbian affinities. Klein says that she "embraced" lesbianism and that it "shaped" her politics in a profound way.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SPRING?
That's 96 humid degrees. Summer sucks. It's something I must endure before I'm blessed with autumn. Autumn, ahhhhhhhh. This year we had one of the chilliest, wettest springs I can recall. Barely two weeks ago our daily high temps were averaging 45*-55*; the nights were hovering in the 35*-45* range. I simply refused to run the furnace, so I wore sweats and my WigWam wool knee socks to bed with several quilts and one cat on top. Then we had maybe three days of truly magnificent sunny springtime and then bam! ... summer. Bah-humbug. Pat, who lives in Phoenix, tells me that he doesn't consider it hot until the mercury reaches 110*. Plus, he told me that Phoenix has a monsoon season! Whoda thunk? Which reminded me that there are palm trees in Ireland, mild winters in Wyoming, and a rainforest in Alaska.
Now on to my interblogatory travels:

NY POLITICS
I think it's safe to assume that the Corning Country Club got its power back for this shindig since Monday's big storm.
As much as I like and admire Jeanine Pirro, incumbants are very difficult to unseat. So if HRC is running for re-election to the Senate, I think she'll win easily.
Surprisingly, HRC might just carry this once conservative area in a presidential election. The area has changed dramatically over the years. Corning Inc. has become extremely liberal in its politics, unnervingly PC in its dealings with employees. Our hometown retired RINO, Amo Houghton, used to be considered more Republican, although never quite a conservative. Good God, he even hosted a fundraiser for Hillary in his mansion right here in Corning! Not to mention the fact ... again ... that he was one of four Repubs who voted against impeaching Bill Clinton. As long as Amo ran, nobody was able to beat him, although his few competitors weren't strong candidates. His advantages were name recogition and million$ of buck$. HRC's advantages are name recognition, bringing home the pork (even though you try to explain to people that that pork was originally picked from their pockets), and, of course, million$ of buck$. HRC is not the smartest woman in the world, regardless of what she may think, nor is she the best politician. However, never underestimate a totally ruthless and crooked politician who's holding hundreds of confidential FBI files on his/her opponents.
Pirro seeks stronger sex crime penalties
A potential triple-threat on the state political level came back to her roots Tuesday night, when Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro was feted by local Republicans at the Corning Country Club.
Elmira native Pirro, 53, a potential Republican candidate for state Attorney General and U.S. Senate, could also be in the running for governor, if Gov. George Pataki decides not to run for a fourth term.
The Notre Dame High School graduate announced two weeks ago she would not seek a fourth term as D.A., opening the door for a bid for statewide offices with reportedly strong White House support if she decides to oppose U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
…
An advocate for victims of domestic abuse since 1978, Pirro has also spearheaded tough prosecution of sexual predators.
…
The law would put habitual sexual predators in prison for an extended period of time, with an annual review of each predator's ability to return to society.
According to some accounts, more than 50 percent of pedophiles and nearly 40 percent of rapists repeat their crimes after serving time behind bars. Studies indicate pedophiles violate 144 children during their lives, Pirro said.
…
A recent Siena College Research Institute Poll indicated Attorney General Eliot Spitzer would cruise by Pataki by a 5 to 3 margin; Clinton could expect to be re-elected by a 59 percent majority, according to the same poll.

George Orwell's 1984 is published today in 1949. A vision of a lone individual attempting to rebel against a repressive, violent state, the book has become a classic of its kind. Despite its grim aura, 1984 was mostly written in the beautiful surroundings of the Scottish island of Jura. |

LIGHT SUMMER READING?
Faulknerized
The last time we visited DakotaPundit, she had decided to enjoy “A Summer Of Faulkner”:
Scoff at me if you must, but this summer I'll be heading into Oprah's online classroom to study As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury, and Light in August.
So, how’s she doin’?
So far, so good with the Faulkner class. I had no trouble reading the first 100 pages of As I Lay Dying. … It's quite the ride. Depending on who's talking in the book, the text takes off on any number of tangents, and standard rules of punctuation and spelling tend to get left behind.
You go, girl!

WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS
There's nothing like a wild'n'woolly storm through the eyes of a child.
Yesterday began hot'n'humid. As I was gathering the last of my blog fodder, DogMan stopped in to say that a severe storm was on its way. I took one look at the sky in the west and posted what I had as quickly as possible. Batten down the hatches time! And then I waited for the storm to pass. A couple of hours later, as I left to care for Little H, the power went. The power was on and fine all during the wicked weather and blows when the sun is out and the birds are singing. Go figure.
Nurse G, Little H and CO were at the Country Club preparing for their big annual NRA dinner/fund raiser bash when the storm hit. We live on the NY/PA border, and there was a report that a funnel cloud was spotted in Tioga County, PA. Tornado-like weather whipped the Country Club, ripping siding off the buildings and sending an enormous glass table top flying to God-knows-where.
Although my power was out, Nurse G's was on, but not her cable, so no tv or computer. Damn. Little H, however, entertained me with his blow by blow description of the storm he witnessed first hand at the Country Club in his own articulate three-and-a-half-year-old wide-eyed annimated way. And then he showed me how he would fight the next storm with his fists.
The Country Club had no power at all. No lights. No cooking. No air conditioning. And that ain't all. Since it's not on a city water supply, it relies on pumps, run by electricity, for its water. No electricity = no running water pumps = no flushing toilets, either. Swell, especially on a dreadfully humid day.
I don't know how they did it, but the dinner was held anyway. And Little H had no problem sleeping.
Storm rocks Tiers
A powerful spring thunderstorm battered the Twin Tiers with winds up to 60 mph around noon Monday, splitting and uprooting trees, pulling down power lines, touching off a tornado-like funnel cloud in Tioga County, Pa., and momentarily lifting the roof off the Ruby Tuesday restaurant at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats.
New York State Electric & Gas Corp. spokeswoman Denise Whitty said about 19,000 customers in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties were without electrical service shortly after the storm.
…
David Cohick, director of the Tioga County, Pa., Emergency Services Department, confirmed that workers spotted a funnel cloud near Tioga-Hammond Dam late Monday morning. But it wasn't classified as a tornado because it never set down.
"We definitely had a funnel cloud," he said. "That came from Corps of Engineers workers at Tioga-Hammond. But it didn't get to the ground."

Why I'm Leaving Wachovia: I never owned slaves. No one I know ever owned slaves. No one who is alive today was a slave. … My ancestors came over after slavery was abolished, and so not even my forebears owned slaves. Why should I feel guilty?
Terri would be alive if she had been in prison: An Appeals court in Washington state ruled that a prisoner who wanted to die by starvation could be force fed. The judge said that, "the state has an interest in protecting the sanctity of the lives of its citizens." Isn't this what President Bush, the Congress and Florida Governor Jeb Bush said about the Schiavo case?
I thought this only happens in cartoons: Mary Higgins Clark had surgery yesterday on the ankle she broke three weeks ago when she shipped on a banana peel on her kitchen floor.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN
to come to the aid of the party.
Stand Up For Our President Against the Radical Lefts Attacks
THE ISSUE...
The Radical Left – led by MoveOn.org, Michael Moore and others – are continuing the outrageous attacks on President Bush. In fact, many are starting to beat the drum for impeachment! Meanwhile, the mainstream media is already proclaiming President Bush a “lame duck.” We expect a full assault on this Presidency in the coming weeks.
But these attacks aren’t just about defeating our President. These radical attacks are damaging to our brave fighting forces and in a real way put our troops who are fighting for our freedoms at even greater risk.
Immediate Action: SIGN OUR SUPPORT THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF PETITION.
Grassfire is hoping to rally 500,000 freedom-loving citizens who stand together against radical, anti-war attacks against our President and his ongoing efforts to rid the world of terrorist threats.
Just as a refresher ...
From July 9, 2004, "Bush lied" campaign collapses.

YEAH, I'M HERE
I was visiting my aging mother and assorted family. Very tiring trip, what with long drives, 91 humid degrees and lots of friggin' family dramas, all of which were out of my control. I slept very little and ate infrequently. I returned to dirty dishes, no food, lawns which now must be harvested, bills to pay, and three pissed-off cats because DogMan's bitch (4-legged variety) is still in heat and living inside. All those shedding pets living inside meant mountains of fur to vacuum. Too bad my vacuum doesn't work, so off to Wally*World so DogMan could buy me a new one. I'm trying to get this written and posted before a big mamma jamma boomer of a storm descends upon me. So, here's the Reader's Digest version of today's musings:
Will this be Jacko's destiny?: He may well be carted off to California's Corcoran State, an exclusive institution for sinister stars and high-profile criminals. There, a host of infamous killers and lowlifes are housed in a 44-cell protective-custody unit. Among his new neighbors would be: Robert F. Kennedy's killer, Sirhan Sirhan; Mikail Markhasev, who murdered Bill Cosby's son, Ennis; and a psycho who needs no introduction — Charles Manson. Yet, despite the number of hardened killers in close proximity, the unit is deemed a relatively safe place to be.
The horror, the inhumanity of it all!: "I've got to get my pedicure and manicure done," [Jennifer] Wilbanks said. "I've got to pack for this honeymoon, and I don't even know where I'm going. Blah, blah, blah. I was like, there's no absolute way I'm going to get all this done." Blah blah blah indeed. How did the poor princess last as long as she did?
Rik finally enjoyed Rome: There were some crazy things that happened, but decorum prevents me from giving details. You’ll just have to use your imagination. I had a good run: 2 Venice Pub Crawls, Bologna, Amsterdam, Geneva, Lausanne, and Rome twice. But alas, the run is over.
Don't hate her because she's erudite. DakotaPundit is excited about Faulkner: Scoff at me if you must, but this summer I'll be heading into Oprah's online classroom to study As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury, and Light in August. … [S]ome amazon reviewers seem to have their panties in a bunch over the fact that Oprah would promote this program to the hoi polloi.
Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, Lee has a potty mouth! (tee hee hee): I guess they won't be linking to my site. I don't use the words c**k, c**k***ker, c**t, f**k, m*******ker, s**t, and t*t, but I've got a big Dick on the cover of most of my books.
